I Recently had the opportunity to listen to Ken Martel newly appointed Director of USA Hockey’s American Development Model, make a presentation on USA Hockey’s newly unveiled “American Development Model.” It was not a massage therapy session!Retention of grass roots youth hockey players has been in decline since 2000! 20% of new hockey players play only one season before they drop out! 43% of players drop out by age 9! 60% of players drop out before Pee Wee.

As we near the closing of our 10th Anniversary with the Phoenix Polar Bears Junior team, I am asked often “who my favorite player or moment was?” The answer is always the same, “they have all been my favorite.”The other question I get asked very often is how do the Phoenix Polar Bears continue to win championships(6), qualify for Nationals (8 Straight)and develop players so consistently?” Normally, I have not had very good answers for these questions, until recently.

I had the great honor of playing for Wayne Fleming in college (current coach KHL Avangard Omsk) and a greater honor playing for Wayne’s father Jake for 3 years as a kid. On this team we had 5 future NHL players and Bobby Hull’s son, Blake.
