2012/13 AHU Team Coaching: Peewee Black Knights.
# of years coaching: 2nd year with AHU. 3 years previous at Gilbert Polar Ice. 3 years coaching while playing HS hockey in North Dakota.
Home Town: Mandan, North Dakota
Occupation: Microchip Technology – Quality Department
CEP Level: Currently 2. Will be 3 at the start of the 2012/13 season.
My name is Corey Yantzer and I was born, raised, and played organized hockey in Mandan, North Dakota. For those that do not know, Mandan is located near the center of the state on the Missouri river across from Bismarck (the State capital). I have been and still am an avid fan of the North Stars, Vikings, Twins, Fighting Sioux, and Coyotes. In 1989 two significant things happened to me....I graduated from high school and I was the captain of the North Dakota State Midgets hockey championship team (that was a rewarding experience that I will never forget). Since graduating from high school I moved to Arizona and have lived here for over 20 years (playing hockey the entire time on men’s leagues). I have a master’s degree in business administration and I work in the quality department for Microchip Technology in Chandler, Arizona.
I started playing hockey when I was 4 or 5 years old on outdoor rinks and on frozen ponds, lakes, and rivers. I spent nearly every day at the rink or river in the winter time. At the age of 14, while playing midget hockey, I started coaching mites and refereeing squirt and mite games and continued to do so till I moved to Arizona. As I stated earlier we won the ND Midget State championship my senior year of high school. Much to my surprise hockey was alive and well in the desert so I was able to continue my hockey playing career by playing in men’s leagues at various rinks after moving to Arizona. I have played with and against many ex-college and professional players throughout my career.
My coaching career was rejuvenated a few years ago as I have assisted with Kids First, Initiation Programs, and have been the head coach of various house teams at Gilbert Polar Ice. I spent the 2011/12 season coaching the AHU Squirt B Knights with Jason Evahnenko. Our Knights team had a spectacular season that included an article published in USA hockey magazine about our team, a trip to Fargo ND for the largest Squirt Tourney in North America, and a tournament championship at the annual Turkey Shoot.
My reasons for coaching hockey are unique when compared to most coaches as I do not have children playing the sport. I grew up playing hockey at an early age and the mentors who taught me this great game not only taught me to be a better hockey player and to love this game but taught me lessons that have carried into my personal, educational, and professional life too. Not only is coaching a great reason for me to be a part of the greatest sport on earth but it allows me to give back to the sport I love just like all of the coaches who taught me.
